Our camera traps at Loros Wildlife Sanctuary captured this elusive guartinaja (Cuniculus paca), a large, nocturnal rodent native to Latin America — and an important seed disperser in tropical forests.

Pacas are shy and mostly active at night, spending their time foraging for fallen fruits under dense vegetation. With their stocky build, spotted coats, and quiet steps, they often go unnoticed — unless you’re patient and well-positioned with a camera trap.
