Abkhazia: Protests in Breakaway Region of Georgia Over Russian Investment Deal

Protesters storm the regional parliament in Abkhazia to protest an investment agreement with Russia that allows the construction of up to 10 thousand apartment hotel units. The protesters rammed through parliament complex gates using a truck and wrenched off metal bars to climb through windows to disrupt the parliament proceedings on ratifying the deal, opposed by Abkhazia's opposition leaders. The protesters also charged into the adjoining presidential administration building. Police fired tear gas at protesters hurling eggs and plastic bottles. The protesters opposed the deal, citing concerns over foreign land ownership in the region and fears of being priced out of the property market. The protesters seek the resignation of the President of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, who has halted the treaty to “stabilise the situation”. Meanwhile, Russia expressed concern over the protests and asked its citizens not to visit Abkhazia. Russia-backed Abkhazia is a breakaway Georgian region, which separated from the country after a small war in 2008.
