This is an animation of the Millikan oil drop experiment. This experiment was conducted in the early 1900's and is quite elegant. Millikan using a fine spray of oil drops and an X-ray source was able to create very small, negatively charged oil drops. By adjusting the voltage in the lower chamber, he was able to determine the fundamental charge of an electron. How cool is that! Based on earlier experiments by Thomson, he was also able to calculate the mass of an electron. Wow! This animation does not show all that was involved in his experiment (too complicated), but it does show the main points quite well. In my humble opinion. :-)
