अटाकामा मरुस्थल, दक्षिण अमेरिका में स्थित दुनिया का सबसे शुष्क मरुस्थल है. यह चिली के उत्तरी भाग में एंडीज़ पर्वत के पश्चिम में प्रशांत तट पर फैला हुआ है.
दुनिया के कुछ और शुष्क प्रदेश और मरुस्थल:
सहारा मरुस्थल, अल्जीरिया, चाड, मिस्र, लीबिया, माली, मॉरिटानिया, नाइजर, पश्चिमी सहारा, सूडान, और ट्यूनीशिया में फैला है.
गोबी मरुस्थल, चीन और मंगोलिया में स्थित है.
कालाहारी मरुस्थल, बोत्सवाना, दक्षिण अफ़्रीका के कुछ हिस्सों, और नामीबिया के कुछ हिस्सों में फैला है.
मरुस्थल और शुष्क क्षुपभूमियां, ऐसे बायोम होते हैं जिन पर बहुत कम मात्रा में नमी पड़ती है. इन जगहों पर हर साल 250 मिलीमीटर से कम बारिश और बर्फ़ गिरती है.
