Nutmeg is the seed or the ground spice derived from the species of genus Myristica. Fruit that contains the Nutmeg seed (Jaiphal) at the centre with red and crimson covering aril, the souce of mace (Javitri spice). Both Nutmeg and mace are parts of same plant Myristica.

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is an evergreen indigenous tree to the Maluku islands of Indonesia. It is an important source of the spices Nutmeg (Jaiphal) and mace (Javitri). It is widely grown across the tropics including Guangdong and Yunnan in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Grenada in the Caribbean, Kerala in India, Sri Lanka and South America.
Myristica fragrans is an evergreen tree, 15-20m or up to 30 m. Leaves alternate, 5-15 cm long and 2-7 cm wide. Flowers dioecious, bell shaped, pale yellow. Fruit has a fleshy husk inside is a purple brown, shiny seed, 2-3 x 2 cm across, with red or crimson covering (an aril). Nutmeg is derived from the seed of Myristica fragrans and spice, mace is derived from the seed coat.
Nutmeg is medicinally useful in the treatment of gastrointestinal disturbances such as cramps, flatulence and diarrhoea. It also possess natural sedative properties having calming effects on body and mind.
An ointment of Nutmeg butter has been used as a counterirritantand in the treatment of rheumatism.
