The video shows the top 15 NATO countries, ranked from highest expenditure (top), to lowest expenditure (bottom), during each given year. The values are in US dollars. Countries that joined NATO later are not included until the year that they joined. This means if they joined in 2004, for example, they will not be included in the chart until that given year shows up.
Military spending values are adjusted for inflation and expressed in constant (2019) US Dollars. The availability of data varies considerably by country, but for a majority of countries that were independent at the time, data is available from at least the late 1950s. Estimates for regional military expenditure have been extended backward depending on the availability of data for countries in the region, but no estimates for total world military expenditure are available before 1988 due to the lack of data for the Soviet Union.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949. The purpose of this organization was to deter Soviet/Communist expansionism, forbid the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe through a strong presence of North America on the continent, and to encourage European political integration. In one of the treaty's notable articles, article 5, it states that an armed attack against one or more NATO countries shall be considered an attack against them all. This means that each country would respond appropriately, using armed forces if necessary. As of 2023, the 31NATO countries include: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
