The DIAC acts as a threshold switch in this circuit. It ensures that the TRIAC is triggered only when the voltage drop across the LDR (in darkness) is sufficient to exceed the DIAC's breakover voltage. This prevents the TRIAC from being triggered by small or gradual changes in the LDR's resistance, ensuring reliable operation of the light-activated switch.


In light conditions, the voltage at the junction of the DIAC and the 390kΩ resistor remains low, insufficient to trigger the DIAC.

In dark conditions, the voltage at this junction increases significantly due to the high resistance of the LDR, potentially reaching a peak value around 272V, which is sufficient to trigger the DIAC and, subsequently, the TRIAC.

Thus, the voltage at the junction is highly dependent on the light condition and the corresponding resistance of the LDR.
