Throughout its history, Poveglia has served various purposes, transitioning from a refuge to a place of exile and a dumping ground for the unwanted and the afflicted.

Poveglia Island is nicknamed the “Island of #Ghosts” due to its gruesome past.

Poveglia island has a rich and complex history that predates its association with darkness and horror. In ancient times, the island tribe as an economic centre, bustling with activity and harbouring a growing population. Documents from as early as 421 mention Poveglia, highlighting its significance in the region.

However, a devastating event occurred during the war of Chioggia in 1378. The people of Poveglia known as Povegliotti were forced to evacuate to Venice for their safety. When the war finally concluded in 1381, Poveglia was left in ruins, and only a few brave inhabitants, were able to return their homes.
