One of the most advanced and fastest planes ever built, with a top speed of over Mach 3 (around 2,200 mph).
The development of the SR-71 began in the early 1960s, when the US Air Force began looking for a replacement for the U-2 spy plane, which was vulnerable to enemy missiles. Lockheed's Skunk Works division, headed by legendary aircraft designer Kelly Johnson, was awarded the contract to design and build the new aircraft.
The SR-71 was designed to be a stealthy, high-speed reconnaissance plane that could fly at extremely high altitudes, above 80,000 feet, to avoid detection by radar and surface-to-air missiles. To achieve these goals, Lockheed developed advanced materials, including titanium, which allowed the plane to withstand the extreme heat generated by its high speeds.
The first SR-71 flew in 1964, and the plane entered service with the US Air Force in 1966. It was used extensively for reconnaissance missions during the Cold War, including overflights of the Soviet Union and other sensitive areas. The SR-71 was retired from service in 1998, but it remains an iconic aircraft and a testament to the ingenuity of its designers and builders.
