The commissioning of India's first indigenously designed and manufactured aircraft carrier is a watershed moment in the Indian Navy's history. The namesake and successor to the nation's beloved first aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, will catapult India into the exclusive club of the world's great naval powers.
Made in India INS Vikrant
The Indian Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1) is the first aircraft carrier designed and built in India. Vikrant was designed by the Indian Navy's in-house Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by the Cochin Shipyard, a public sector shipyard, with state-of-the-art automation features. It is the largest ship ever built in India's maritime history. It is the largest warship ever built in India, with a large number of indigenous equipment and machinery manufactured by major Indian industrial houses as well as over 100 MSMEs.

Following its commissioning, the IAC-1 will be renamed INS Vikrant in honour of India's first aircraft carrier of the same name.
India's previous aircraft carriers
India has been utilising warships since 1961, but INS Vikrant will be the first one to be built domestically. None of them were produced in India, not even the previous INS Vikrant. According to The Indian Express, the British built the INS Vikrant and INS Viraat, which were admitted into the navy in 1961 and 1987, respectively, and were formerly known as "HMS Hercules" and "HMS Hermes." Later aircraft carriers, notably the Soviet-Russian-made INS Vikramaditya, which the Navy commissioned in 2013, were once known as Admiral Gorshkov.

While INS Vikrant will be commissioned on September 2, it won't be a deployable platform that can be utilised in combat for at least the following 15 days.
