Описание к видео Who Are The Biggest-Selling Certified Soul & Funk Bands? (1980-1999)

Who Are The Biggest-Selling Certified Soul & Funk Bands? (1980-1999)

In the fourth episode of a new series called, ‘Certified Soul Kings & Queens’, Soulful Charts spotlights the top bands in R&B/Soul and Funk with a dynamic bar chart race highlighting a 20-year period of gold & platinum certification album sales.

Over 40 R&B and Funk and soul-driven Rock bands earned gold and platinum album certifications (1980-1999).

Watch the very fast-paced race between the Top Certified Soul Bands. Check out the dramatic change in the Top tier, year by year.

*The second band at the end of the chart (1999) is The Commodores. They released a ‘Best of…” album that year that was eventually certified gold in 2004.

Source:
RIAA (Gold & Platinum database)
Gold: 500,000 copies sold
Platinum: 1,000,000 copies sold
(Only sales numbers of albums released between 1980-2009 are included)
(*Approximate sales numbers used as recorded in RIAA’s database)
https://RIAA.com

Note: All of the up-to-date certified sales numbers for each album are highlighted in the album’s release year in the bar chart.

Let’s say an album was released in 1994 and it has certification dates across multiple years after its release - the numbers in the chart reflect the TOTAL sales numbers of an album, shown on the chart in the album's release year.

*By the way: ‘Greatest Hits/Best of’ albums were also considered in the research, which is why you’ll see 70’s artists showing up in the chart in the 80’s (and 80’s artists in the 90’s, etc). If an album was released in a specific year, the certified sales numbers are included in the chart.

Second note: RIAA certification numbers are approximate. Artists have certainly sold more album copies than recorded in RIAA’s database. For example, albums that weren’t certified gold by RIAA are not included in the data even though those projects could have sold several hundred thousand copies. Non-RIAA certified albums (for example, releases with less than 500,000 copies sold) are not included in the data due to unavailable or unverifiable sales data.

Also: an album might be certified platinum; selling more than 1,000,000 copies but less than 2,000,000. That album could have sold 1.2 million OR 1.8 million, for example. That’s a wide disparity. So, again, sales numbers are approximate.

Final note: I can guarantee I missed some albums certifications, possibly by your favorite artist. Soul music has produced MANY gold and platinum albums and I’m sure a few fell through the cracks in my research.

But remember: I only looked at certs data for albums released within a 20-year span, between 1980 and 1999. So -- if an album was released in late 1979 and was certified gold or platinum in 1980 or later, it wasn’t included.
