Bengali music, evolved over millennia, is known for its lyrical beauty and emotive
depth. As we all know, there are several prominent genres within Bengali music,
be it Traditional songs (Kheyal, Tappa, Thungri, Dhrupad, Raagpradhaan etc.),
Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Atulprasadi, Dwijendrageeti, Shyamasangeet,
Folk Songs (Baul, Bhatiali, Jhumur, Kirtan etc.), or Modern Bengali Songs
(Adhunik, Rock, Pop, Band, Fusion etc).
Raagas, the melodic frameworks in Indian classical music, especially Hindustani
Classical Music, have had a significant influence on Bengali songs, infusing them
with a rich tapestry of emotions and moods.
Rabindranath Tagore was deeply influenced by Indian classical music and
incorporated various raagas into his compositions. Kazi Nazrul Islam combined
the traditional Bengali songs and Hindustani Classical Music to create a new
genre. Bengali composers have experimented with various raagas to create new
musical expressions. The blending of classical and regional musical traditions
has created a unque sound that is both classical and contemporary. The
influence of raagas in Bengali songs has enriched the musical heritage of Bengal,
creating a dynamic and emotionally resonant musical tradition.
In our Program “ Rager Jhankare”, we will present some of the melodious Bengali
songs and bandish based on famous Hindustani Raags. Starting with morning
raagas like Bhairav, known as Aadi Raag, which portrays the peacefulness of
strong mind we will flow through afternoon soothing raagas like Bhimpalasi etc.
to the night raagas which produces a tranquil atmosphere and finally conclude
with the queen of melodies, raaga Bhairavi.
