You can dislike fitness culture and still benefit from fitness.

They say exercise is essential for health, but a lot of people struggle with regular consistent workouts. They might follow it, but it just doesn't interest them. However, there might be other options they haven't considered.

I think there's a slight disconnect between our understanding of "exercise = healthy" and what we consider as "exercise."

We have images of weights, calisthenics, jogging on treadmills, etc. While these are fine examples of exercise, not that many people regularly go to the gym. Sources vary, but some report as low as 1-2% have a gym membership AND actively use it a few times a week.

Does this mean that 90%+ of people are missing out from the critical component of exercise in health?

Maybe. There are pretty special benefits to resistance and mobility training and having a good balanced workout routine. It's hard to fully replace.

But there are people who don't actively work out (in the way we often consider) that still have many of the benefits of fitness. These people may live in environments that require a lot of walking, or they may have physical jobs or hobbies. While we don't consider this "working out" in the usual sense, it still contributes to physical activity and can greatly improve someone's life if they were sedentary before.

Why does this matter? Well, some of us may have family and friends we want to help. However, some of them will just not want to follow a workout routine. There are some people that just have no interest in going to the gym. They MIGHT try calisthenics (I've noticed they're usually more open to it) but just aren't interested in it.

These people can benefit from physical hobbies or habits. Playing casual sports or walking with friends doesn't have exercise as the forefront, but involves it. This keeps them active and moving and can tick a lot of the boxes that make exercise good for us.

To be clear, there are many benefits to building strength, mobility, muscle etc. with regular training. Not everyone enjoys it, but I do recommend it. However, even if you don't want to consistently do that, it's good to have other options.
