One of Europe’s largest underwater coastal cave systems lies hidden beneath the island of Mallorca and access is so restricted that only permitted scientific teams are allowed inside. In this episode of DiveSAGA, I join local cave divers to explore the legendary Sa Gleda cave system, revealing why these underwater caves are so heavily protected and what makes them one of the most extraordinary cave dives in the Mediterranean.
From a dramatic sinkhole entrance secured by multiple locks to massive chambers like the 500 Gallery and the delicate Gallery of Feathers, this dive takes us deep into Mallorca’s underground world. Along the way, we encounter towering stalagmites, fragile mineral formations, and the strange optical effect of haloclines where fresh and salt water meet.
Sa Gleda stretches over 14 kilometers and represents decades of exploration by Mallorcan cave divers and scientists. In this series, we look at how these caves formed millions of years ago, how rising and falling sea levels shaped them, and why documenting them responsibly is essential for their long-term protection.
This dive also raises an important question: should humans have access to every hidden place on Earth? Or are some environments better left untouched? By showing the beauty and fragility of Mallorca’s caves, this project aims to support ongoing research and conservation efforts protecting this underground sanctuary.
This is part 1 of a 3-part cave diving series in Mallorca.
Subscribe for parts 2 and 3 as we go deeper into one of the most legendary underwater cave systems in Europe.
