Hernia is the swelling in the abdominal part or inguinal region. Patient usually presents with swelling in the umbilicus or previous operated site or inguinal region. That is called as groin usual symptoms are selling and pain, unless hernia is complicated, patient will have painless swelling. So in any painless swelling, we will have to consult a clinician for the diagnosis. The types of hernia are inguinal hernia, ventral hernia and incisional hernia. Incisional hernia is the hernia at the previous operated site. If the patient underwent any previous appendicectomy, open gall bladder surgery or open laparotomy, if the scar is big, , the patient will have a swelling there. That is called as incisional hernia. Umbilical hernia is in the umbilicus. The patient will have swelling in the umbilicus, the belly and later stage patient will have on and off pain. Inguinal hernia patient will have pain in the groin and it is most common in male. The ventral hernia or incisional hernia are more common in males. Usually the diagnosis is made by clinician and we do ultrasound scan and CT scan for the diagnosis of hernia. A hernia should be treated. Hernia is a weakness of the musculature. So we need to repair the hernia with a mesh. That is called as prosthetic mesh. We use a proline prosthetic mesh. In a hernia surgery, there are two types of surgery. One is open surgery and the other is laparoscopic surgery. In open surgery the patient ill have a scar of about 5 to 6 cms, and it depends on the size of the hernia and in laparoscopic hernia, we have small holes s of about 5 mm to 1 cms and after surgery they will not have any scar and it is a painless and a blood les surgery. Most of the hernias, I operate in the morning and discharge in the evening. Usually patient will not have any pain and are fit to resume activities in a day or two. So in a laparoscopic surgery, patient will not have any scars ad it is s a less invasive procedure. There are two types of laparoscopic surgeries one is TAPP and TEP in medical terminology. So we decide the type of procedure based on the type of hernias.
