I sailed my 1981 14 foot Hobie Cat with the Boomer sail across Florida Bay from Flamingo to Long Key (mile marker 69.5 in the keys). I had planned on taking a kayak with me, but after a test run I changed my mind. On day 1 I sailed to Rabbit Key where I slept for the night. On day 2 I had almost no wind until I decided to stop on a sandbar for the day. I was only 4 miles from the keys at the time. I threw out the anchor and got in the water to cool off. I seriously went under water and when I came up the wind had all of a sudden picked up. I pulled into a marina on the north east point of Long Key at about 530pm. Of course it was closed, so I decided to take advantage of the wind and head back into Florida bay. That night I pulled into the Johnson Key ckickee at 1030pm. The only reason I didn't go all the way to Flamingo that night is because I didn't want to deal with the mosquitoes. It was very windy on the chickee. I woke up early and headed out around 7am or so. I pulled into Flamingo at 9am.
Along the way I saw quite a few small sharks and more sea turtles than I'd seen in my entire life. The trip was a success. I killed a lot mosquitoes and noseeums. Looking forward to my next trip.
