• Arachnacris corporalis is a species of carnivorous giant katydid native to Malaysia.
• It is ranked as the largest and the loudest katydid on earth, with an impressive body length of 6 inches and a wingspan of 10 inches. And a sound level of 110 decibels.
• But despite their size, they are considered harmless to humans.
• Katydids are related to grasshoppers so they look like similar but katydid has long antennae and leaf like appearance and these characteristics distinguished them from their grasshopper relatives.
• During the day they remain motionless and use their body shapes, twig like legs and leaf like appearance to blend in with its habitat extremely effectively.
• Though it possesses large wings, it rarely chooses to fly and despite the size of its legs, it also rarely jumps either.
• And you know why they are called katydid? Because the noise they make was thought to sound like ‘katy-did- kay-didn’t’ repeated over and over. Just like how other animal names created through imitation of the sound they produce.
• It primarily feeds on vegetation yet occasionally consumes small insects as well.
• And most katydid species can live only for a year or less.
