We’re sharing a winter day building our off-grid homestead while living full-time in a trailer in Northern Ontario. From sawmill work and water hauling in extreme cold to daily chores and learning as we go, this is our real life off grid.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: We get asked these questions a lot, so we wanted to answer a few:
1. Do your kids help with chores and work around the homestead?”
Answer:
Yes, in age-appropriate ways. We’re also very intentional about what we show on camera. In the past, one of our videos was flagged as a kids channel (YouTube guidelines) and our older kids don’t always want to be filmed — and we respect that. Because of that, we don’t regularly show them doing chores or tasks on camera. We’ll share little bits and pieces here and there, but we’re mindful about their privacy and about keeping this channel focused on our off-grid journey as a family, not as a kids channel.
2. Why are your dogs on leash sometimes? And why is only one off leash at a time?
Answer:
We live in a very wild area with wildlife, changing terrain, and equipment around, so walking our dogs on leash keeps them safe. Letting one dog off leash at a time allows us to properly train and monitor them without the risk of them running too far or getting hurt. Early on, we did try having them off leash more often, and they ended up getting lost and injured, which was really hard on all of us. We also have to be mindful of their physical health — when they’re off leash too much, it can put strain on their back legs, and Max has hip dysplasia. Keeping them on leash at times is simply the safest and healthiest choice for them.
3. What does Gina do while Thi is filming?
Answer: Gina and I make a full time income and Gina homeschools our 3 kids and niece, and also we create content for other brands and run our channels. Gina also manages the homes and rest assured we are all very busy working together. We share about 10 % of our lives here but there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes!
4. Why don’t you build a structure over your trailers?
Answer:
Our trailers are temporary living situation. We’re being intentional about where we put our time, money, and energy, and right now that’s focused on preparing the land and moving toward our permanent home build.
5. Why don’t you have enough firewood for the winter?”
Answer:
We try to prepare as much as possible, but building a homestead while living on the land means things don’t always go according to plan. Between clearing land, working, daily chores, and limited space, it’s not always as simple as cutting and stacking more wood. Every year, we learn and we get better prepared. This lifestyle is a constant learning process, and it takes time. A lot of people romanticize off-grid living, but the reality is that it’s not easy. We’re building, working, and figuring things out as we go — one season at a time.
6. How did you build your well?
Answer:
We walk through the entire process in a dedicated video, so if you want to see exactly how we did it step by step, you can watch that video here: • Building a Well on our Off Grid Land
