Every household debates this, should we use hair oil or not? Grandmothers swear by it, while modern-day influencers often say it’s unnecessary. I’m Dr Namratha Puttur, Consultant Dermatologist at Clear Skin and HairMD Pune. Today, I’ll explain the science behind hair oiling and how to do it right.
What Does Hair Oil Actually Do?
Hair is made of a protein called keratin. Keratin is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water. When you wash your hair, water moves through the outer layer to the inner core, causing temporary swelling. If this happens too often, your hair becomes rough and prone to breakage. Hair oil is hydrophobic, it repels water. It reduces this swelling cycle, protecting your hair strands and locking in moisture. Oil also seals the gaps between your hair cuticles, just like cement between roof tiles.

Where Should You Apply Hair Oil, Scalp or Ends?
You should apply oil mainly from the mid-length to the ends of your hair, not directly on the scalp. Why? Our scalp naturally contains a fungus called Malassezia. When you add excess oil, it feeds the fungus and may lead to dandruff. So if you’re prone to flakes or itchy scalp, avoid heavy oiling on the scalp. Focus instead on your hair ends, which need moisture the most.
Is It Okay to Massage the Scalp with Oil?
Occasional scalp massage is absolutely fine, once or twice a month. A gentle massage increases blood flow, promotes relaxation, and can even help you sleep better. But don’t leave the oil on your scalp for too long. One to three hours is enough. After that, wash your hair properly.
What’s the Difference Between Essential Oils and Carrier Oils?
Essential oils like rosemary oil, tea tree oil, and sandalwood oil are potent and should never be used directly on the scalp. Always mix them with carrier oils like coconut oil, almond oil, or argan oil. For Indian hair types, coconut oil is ideal, it contains lauric acid, which coats and protects the hair shaft. Almond oil and argan oil are also great choices, rich in vitamin E and very nourishing.
Does Hair Oil Promote Hair Growth?
Many people assume that oiling the scalp will trigger hair growth. That’s a myth. Hair is biologically dead, so applying oil on it does not make it grow. What oil does is protect and condition existing hair strands. Real hair growth depends on scalp health, not the oil itself. You need a protein-rich diet, stress management, proper sleep, and a balanced lifestyle to support hair growth.
How to Maintain Healthy Hair the Right Way
Use coconut, almond, or argan oil regularly on the ends of your hair. Don’t over-oil your scalp, especially if you have dandruff. Wash your hair properly, maintain a good diet, and manage stress. That’s the real foundation of strong, shiny, breakage-free hair. If you still have questions, feel free to drop them in the comments.
