If someone has advised upper GI endoscopy to you or any of your family member or if you want to gain good information on this, then this video will be very helpful. Myths and misbelief regarding endoscopy are common and people are scared with the word "endoscopy" due to misinformation – so we have covered all these points in the video.

Being a Pediatric Gastroenterologist, we use this procedure very commonly and we get very good information of upper GI tract from upper GI endoscopy.

In Upper GI tract - 1) Esophagus that is food pipe; 2) Stomach and 3) Initial part of small intestine which we call Duodenum, comes.

Whenever a child or an adult who has chronic or recurrent problems related to upper GI tract like chronic pain abdomen, chronic vomiting or recurrent vomiting, failure to thrive or malabsorption syndrome or upper GI bleed bleeding/ mouth bleeding comes, we use this procedure, and we get good information.

For Upper GI #endoscopy we have a very sophisticated instrument which we call “Endoscope”. Upper GI Endoscope is connected to the machine through a processor, and it has an inbuilt monitor and a long flexible tube which we call “Insertion tube”. The tube has a bulb and a camera at the end. We insert the endoscope through mouth and passing through the food pipe, the entire area of the stomach and up to the first and second part of duodenum is examined.

The benefit of upper GI endoscopy is that we can directly visualize the GI mucosa. During the procedure any pathology related to this upper GI tract can be visualized and properly examined. If we find anything abnormal then we can take biopsy which we call Mucosal biopsies.

There are therapeutic indications of upper GI endoscopy – If the patient is bleeding and we find bleeder during endoscopy, we can fix that bleeder. Apart from this, there are other therapeutic indications of upper GI endoscopy.

Now the most important aspect for general public is that we are going for endoscopy and what preparations are required. We don’t need too many preparations. Basically, we need fasting for 6 hours for solids and milk and 4 hours for water.

Most upper GI endoscopy are done under mild IV sedation in the presence of an anesthetist or Pediatric intensivist. If done with due precautions, upper GI endoscopy is a very safe procedure.
