Walmart stabbing suspect Bradford Gille has been determined to be incompetent to stand trial for the time being, but could have competency restored with treatment, 86th Circuit Judge Michael Stepka ruled after hearing expert testimony Friday, August 22.

Gille will have to continue treatment and be reevaluated before he stands trial.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg made the motion following testimony Dr. Jay Witherell, a forensic psychologist and the Director of Evaluation Services at the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry, where Gille currently is.

During his testimony, Dr. Witherell said Gille seems to have a factual understanding regarding his charges and the court process, however his understanding as to how it applies to himself and his case is “illogical.”

He said he interviewed Gille for two hours.

He described Gille as having a “psychotic thought process."

Witherell said he believes Gille is unable to rationally assist in his own defense at this time.

He noted that Gille has, “longstanding delusions of his life.”

Judge Stepka ordered Gille remain at the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry and continue his treatment.

Again, Gille will have to continue treatment and be reevaluated before he stands trial.
