Priced at just £9.99 , this updated set of solar garden lights are quite cheaply and flimsily made but with luck they should last all summer if not longer. They have an attractive design with removable translucent stars housing each of the 50 LED’s which are warm white and add a pleasant effect to the summer garden.

Presentation in a plain and unbranded brown job although practical and eco friendly does not add to their appeal as a gift or for impulse buys. Anyway, inside the box is the 7m length 50 LED starlight set with hard-wired solar panel, garden spike mount set, but no user guide, not that one is needed.

The control box also houses the rechargeable single AA battery which when fully charged should be enough to allow the device to run the whole night, winter as well as summer – although I would recommend, as with all solar power units, that this be brought indoors for winter storage with perhaps a brief outing at Christmas. True, the lighting set is IP65 water-resistant, enough to keep it protected from everything short of water immersion, but you can never be too careful. The solar charger/battery box must be mounted in the ground using the supplied ground spike as no wall or other mounting option is available and it is crucial to prevent water pooling around it.

Controlling the item is easy enough. On the rear are two large and easy to identify buttons, one to turn On/Off the other to scroll through the eight lighting modes available. The modes are: wave forward and backwards, variable lamp chasing, slow dim, flicker chase, 4 light dimming, flickering, always on. The flashing mode uses the least power and will allow a longer running time. Take note that the battery will only charge when the switch is set to ON and it is important to remember to keep the switch in that position should the battery die.

Once in position, the warm white lighting set does look good, aided perhaps by the effect of the stars. When in the On mode the lights will come on at dusk and go off again at dawn or when the battery runs out. Certainly, when correctly positioned they can add some real style to your garden or patio. If you need a set of decent quality budget priced garden string lights then this would be a very good buy.
