Make your own DIY 2-ply fabric face mask with Oneida Health's easy tutorial. Oneida Health is seeking volunteers and supporters to assist in the sewing of protective fabric masks. While the fabric masks are not a substitute for healthcare grade respirator-type masks, this is a coordinated effort to use the DIY fabric masks to extend the life and supply of the respirator masks.

Follow the step-by-step guide to sewing your DIY fabric face mask:

*SEWING STEPS*

00:03 Materials
00:13 Cut TWO Blocks of 9"x10" fabric and TWO pieces of 9" long elastic
00:20 Place right sides together to make a double layer
00:27 Sew across the top and bottom using a 1/4" seam
00:32 Turn fabric right-side out and press
00:37 Create three pleats, 3/4" wide. The last pleat should be 1 3/4" from the bottom. Press and Pin.
00:47 Stitch down the side seams
00:53 Fold seams over by 1/4" and press. Repeat again with 1/2"
01:05 Place elastic inside the channel, and sew on the innermost edge.
01:12 You've done it!

*PROJECT SUPPLIES*

A sewing machine
An iron for pressing
Preshrunk 50/50 polyester cotton blend material (white is preferred, but patterns and colors are acceptable.)
1 yard creates approximately 5 masks
No red fabrics please – the color may run when laundered
Elastic cord or 1/8” elastic ribbon
1 yard creates approximately 2 masks
Thread
Small clips or pins could also be helpful for pinning the fabric folds into place

How to Donate Completed Masks or Materials to Make Masks:
Completed masks can be dropped off at the hospital main entrance Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Our security team at the front desk will be happy to accept them.

Please double bag all donated fabric face masks and or materials to make masks. All materials and donated masks will be sterilized prior to use.
Please include the Name(s), Phone Number, and Address of the individual or individuals who donated (optional, but appreciated!)

Additional Ways to Help:
We are also accepting in-kind donations of personal protective equipment from individuals and businesses. All items must be new. We are currently accepting the following materials to supplement our current supplies:

Disposable Face Masks (isolation, procedural, surgical, and n95 masks)
Latex-free Gloves
Medical Gowns
Face Shields/Goggles
