Hi, my name is Shaleah, and I'm here to share my story with cosmetic surgery. I actually had lower blepharoplasty with facial fat transfer.
Growing up, for as long as I can remember, I've had these under-eye bags that were really embarrassing. I even think back to middle school when we were making self-portraits in art class, and someone commented, “Yours is going to be really tough because you have to draw those things.” From then on, they got much heavier, and I became more self-conscious. I just got tired of my under-eye bags and how tired I looked. I said, "Okay, you know what? It's time for the inside to match the outside."
I got sick of looking tired, so I decided to do some research on eyelid surgery, which led me to Dr. Ho. I looked at Dr. Ho’s reviews, and they were really good. I also checked out her patient before and afters. But truly, what really sold me was that she is a woman of color. I saw that some of her patients were people of color, and through my research, I realized that different skin types have different concerns, such as keloids or specific scarring. Because she had experience performing surgery with darker skin tones like mine, I knew she was the right choice for me.
The first time we met, I noticed that she was very knowledgeable. I don’t know if she realizes it, but she’s actually really funny. I enjoyed her personality, and her team was also great.
The night before my lower eyelid surgery, I tossed and turned, not because I was nervous, but because I was excited. I knew I would finally look like a refreshed version of myself. The week after my lower eyelid surgery, I looked pretty beat up, but day by day, the swelling went down. I was fine with everything because I knew that once the swelling subsided, my under-eye bags would be gone.
After having the surgery, I definitely feel like I regained my confidence. Now, when I look in the mirror or catch my reflection in a car window, I see a brighter, more refreshed version of myself. I feel much more confident.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience with Dr. Ho. For any women of color, especially African American women who might be hesitant, I would say—this is the one life we have to live. You can find skilled surgeons like Dr. Ho who understand your unique needs. Just go for it!
