Our patented GAHT Greenhouse System is a type of climate battery that enables year-round, energy-efficient climate control by using the volume of soil beneath the greenhouse's footprint as thermal mass to aid in regulating inside temperatures. A Ground to Air Heat Transfer (GAHT®) system allows the greenhouse to produce its own heating and cooling by harnessing the sun's energy and the energy stored in the soil below. This technique can be used to produce a geothermal greenhouse for sustainable climate control and year-round cultivation, with a lower environmental impact than a typical HVAC system.

The GAHT Greenhouse System is beneficial, especially during winter and during the night when greenhouses need heating. This ground-to-air heat transfer is so simple that it only requires a few pieces of piping and fans and the soil beneath the greenhouse. This is the reason why we call our greenhouses self-heating because the source of heat is given by the greenhouse itself, which captures all of the thermal energy contained in the soil. This is also how we can grow crops all year in our greenhouses, even in very cold climates.

Hi, this is Josh from Ceres Greenhouse Solutions. We're back at our greenhouse at 8600 feet to talk about our ground to air heat transfer system, also referred to as a GAHT® system.
GAHT® system allows a greenhouse to provide its own heating and cooling throughout the year with only the use of a few small fans. The GAHT® system works by storing thermal energy in the soil underground. During the day, greenhouses accumulate a lot of heat. Standard greenhouses have to exhaust all this heat outside, essentially wasting it. The GAHT® system uses a fan to draw this excess heat underground, where it is stored in the soil. Specifically, when the greenhouse gets hot enough, thermostats turn on a fan which pumps hot air from the top of the greenhouse through pipes buried underground. As the hot air is circulated underground, the soil absorbs thermal energy from the air. The air is then exhausted back into the greenhouse, now cooler and drier. In other words, the GAHT® is cooling the air by actively heating the soil. When the greenhouse needs heating at night or over the winter, the fan working in the same direction now draws cool air through the warm soil we created all summer. This warmer air is exhausted back into the greenhouse, heating the greenhouse. This simple system requires nothing more than some piping and fans and the soil under the greenhouse. It's why we call our greenhouses self-heating because the source of the heat is provided by the greenhouse itself, which collects all the thermal energy that is stored in the soil. It is also what allows our greenhouses to grow things like bananas and grapefruit year-round, even in climates like this.
