Transitional epithelium

Definition:
Transitional epithelium, also known as urothelium, is a specialized type of stratified epithelium that lines the urinary tract and is adapted to stretch and withstand the toxicity of urine.
It is a multilayered epithelium. It has 4 to 6 layers.

Distribution:
Lines the urinary tract — renal pelvis, ureters, urinary bladder, and part of the urethra.

It is also called urothelium. Because of its distribution


Structure:
Basal cells: Cuboidal or columnar (attached to basement membrane)

Intermediate cells: Polygonal or pear-shaped cell

Superficial cells (umbrella cells): Large, dome-shaped
(sometimes binucleate)


Stretching capacity :
Allows organs like the bladder to expand and contract

Protective Barrier:
Strong barrier against the toxic, acidic nature of urine.

Transitional epithelium - why it is called so....
The cells change shape (transition) depending on the degree of organ distension.

When relaxed (Empty), cells appear cuboidal.
When stretched (Full), cells appear squamous.
Hence, it is called transitional epithelium.
