On May 23, 1990, Jana Shelfer's life changed drastically with the blink of an eye. She was the passenger in a minor automobile accident with major consequences. Instantly, her identity went from promising athlete, competitive baton twirler, peppy cheerleader...to paraplegic. After spending the first 7 weeks of that summer flat on her back, adjusting to the rods they inserted on each side of her spine, Jana spent the next two months in a Colorado rehab hospital earning her PhD in life. Learning to get dressed, transferring to the toilet, driving with hand controls...well, those were the least of her worries. Coping with society, focusing on the positive, retaining a sense of humor...those were the real challenges!

Determined to not let these new challenges keep her down, Jana continues to do the things she loves...such as water skiing, scuba diving and hang gliding!
