For my tasting today I'm delighted to be looking at Elephant Hill's Hawke's Bay Syrah from the 2020 vintage. I am a big fan of the refined, spicy charachter of Hawkes Bay and New Zealand's Syrahs and this one exceeded my high expectations while being at a great value price.

Elephant Hill is a New Zealand wine estate located on the coast in the Hawke’s Bay region, producing a wide range of wines but perhaps best known for reds from Syrah and Bordeaux grape varieties. Among numerous accolades for their wines, the 2013 Merlot-Malbec won the Trophy for Best New Zealand Red Wine at the 2015 International Wine Challenge in London.

The business was founded in 2003 by German businessman Roger Weiss (d. 2016) and his yacht designer wife Reydan after they visited the Te Awanga region while on holiday two years previously. Since 2015 the company has been headed by their son Andreas.

A state-of-the-art, copper-clad winery was built at Te Awanga surrounded by one of the estate’s three vineyards. The other two are located on the Gimblett Gravels, and in the Bridge Pa Triangle. In total there are around 25 hectares (62 acres) of vines. This is a model winery making world-class wines from the estate's sustainably grown fruit.
