Suilven – Alex Rambles

Suilven in Assynt is one of Britain's most legendary mountains. It is a unique and idiosyncratic massif that rises from the stunning knock and lochan landscape like an ancient monster. In fact, such a description is often bandied about to the extent that it has become a cliche. But no other description quite does Suilven justice.


A hike on Suilven is characterised by a long but delightful walk in (and an equally long but delightful walk out). However, once on the ridge, the drama ramps up. The main summit is the great Caisteal Liath, an gigantic dome with a surprisingly spacious summit plateau. On the other end of the ridge is the awesome Meall Meadhonach, which requires a short grade 3 scramble to unlock.


The views from the ridge are absolutely astonishing, with the other Assynt peaks of Quinag, Canisp and Cul Mor strutting their stuff. For UK mountain lovers, there are few more essential adventures than Suilven.
