In this online presentation, Altino tells about her experience, as a western-trained musician, of learning to play the traditional Korean sanjo on the violin. The process of learning to "speak Korean" on the violin closely relates to that of learning a foreign language for the first time -- enormously challenging yet immensely rewarding (1:20).

A brief introduction (9:30) of the Korean tone (성음), changdan (장단), p'ansori (판소리), and sanjo (산조)* precedes the explanation and demonstration of how to interpret the unique traditional idioms on the violin (19:00).

양악인이 전통 음악의 언어를 배우는 과정은 생전 처음 듣는 외국말을 배우는 과정과 매우 흡사합니다. 무슨 말인지 통 알아 듣지 못하여 어렵고 답답하기 그지없습니다. 그러나 선조들이 물려준 훌륭한 음악을 한 마디씩 또박또박 익히다 보면 어느새 그 어떤 서양의 곡들을 공부할 때보다 배부르고 즐거울 수 있습니다. 이것이 바로 mother tongue인가 싶습니다. 양악인의 관점에서 우리의 민속음악을 소개합니다.
