Introduction

Today we’ll be looking at the key features of the LX-5 as well as my musical impressions of the instrument.

Four Big Takeaways

Tone Generator
The Piano Reality Modeling engine is a total revamp over the prior Pure Acoustic and a dramatic upgrade compared to the SuperNATURAL modelling engine. This new tone generator is capable of multi-channel digital output straight to the amplifiers, which provides an increase in fidelity, while the increase in processing speed generates a more complex sound model.
How this affects what you hear, whether using headphones or speakers, is to create an unbelievably clean, tight, and precise sound; three adjectives that would not have applied to the LX705. It had a pleasant sound with lots of cabinet ambience, space, and artifacts around the tone, but not tight, clean, or precise.
The upgraded engine contains multiple different soundboard models that are appropriate and enjoyable depending on the acoustic space and whether using headphones or speakers, whereas the LX705 only featured one or two.
The realism of the hammer noise and cabinet resonance is considerably better than prior rendering engines from Roland. The increased fidelity from the resonance engines creates a very intimate sense of connection and responsiveness.

Speakers
A major reconfiguration from the LX705, the LX-5 uses digital amplification with a dramatic increase to 100 Watts of total power, versus 60 Watts in the 705, with all of the speakers located in the top portion of the cabinet. This is both a musical and practical consideration, making transportation easier and bringing your ears closer to the speakers.
Most of the power increase is in the tweeters, giving more high-end mechanical artifacts as well as resonance. By extending the music desk, even more high-end detail can be heard, which creates a better soundstage experience.

Action
The PHA-50 action, with a longer key bed, a stabilizer pin, and wood panels on the sides of the keys, has a couple of upgrades to the physical action and centre technology in the LX-5. These new actions are physically quieter than those from four or five years ago, with upgraded dampening and greasing that provide a more fluid experience with less mechanical sound and less of a thump at the bottom of the key bed.
The upgraded triple sensor will be felt the most by nuanced players. The algorithm that interprets the sensor data and translates it into an input to the tone generator has been changed. The amount of time for the sensor data to be translated has been reduced by several milliseconds which gives a faster and more accurate tonal response from when you press the keys.
This will create a greater sense of connection and responsiveness from the piano, even if it is at a subconscious level. Those using this to input into a DAW or recording will appreciate the more accurate MIDI curve.

Cabinet
The LX-7 has a few subtle changes in terms of beveling and tone port location for hearing the high-end definition. It is also offered in charcoal black, dark rosewood, light oak, and ebony polish.
There is also a buttonless touchscreen that you can turn off without turning off the instrument.
