The popliteal fossa is a diamond-shaped anatomical space located at the posterior aspect of the knee joint 🦵, serving as a crucial passageway for neurovascular structures 🧠💉 traveling from the thigh to the leg. It is bounded superiorly by the biceps femoris (laterally) 💪 and semitendinosus and semimembranosus (medially) 📜, and inferiorly by the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle 🧶. The floor of the fossa is formed by the popliteal surface of the femur, posterior knee capsule, and the popliteus muscle, while the roof is formed by skin and deep fascia. 🔹 Tibial nerve (most superficial) ⚡ – Supplies most of the posterior leg muscles and gives off branches like the sural nerve.
