A British court found that the government's intention to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is unconstitutional since the African country cannot be designated a safe third country.

According to the Court of Appeal justices, Rwanda's asylum system flaws constitute a serious risk of returning individuals to their home countries, where they may face persecution or harsh treatment.

The decision is a blow to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has been trying to discourage individuals from crossing the English Channel in small boats.
As part of a £120 million ($148 million) deal to prevent crossings from France, the UK government planned to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The court's decision has brought relief to many asylum seekers who have experienced trauma and uncertainty while waiting for their cases to be heard.
