Airport directors in northern Michigan are raising concerns over potential funding cuts that could significantly impact smaller airports in the region. A new bill aimed at protecting these airports is being sent to the U.S. Senate.

Jeff Mallory, director of Pellston Regional Airport, highlighted the importance of the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, which faces about $300 million in cuts proposed by the Trump administration.

"You have a one stop from Pellston directly to Chicago and then transfer on, or to Detroit and do the same thing. So it really does put anyone in our area in touch with the rest of the world through air service," said Mallory.

Mallory expressed his concerns about the proposed cuts.

"That's gut wrenching. It's something that would be detrimental to us. And several other airports in northern Michigan."

Airports in Pellston, Alpena, Manistee, and Sault Ste. Marie are among those eligible for EAS funding, which is used to contract airlines to operate through smaller airports.
