This great book of the Bible tells of the turmoil between God and the Israelites while they were wandering in the wilderness. It was a miserable time for the people and God. Exodus told of Israel's desire to worship pagan gods and to return to Egypt amid God's efforts to organize them as a nation. In Numbers nothing changed except the intensity of frustration as well as punishments.

Upon arriving at the promise land of Canaan God told them to send 12 spies into the land to see it. All but two of them came back afraid saying that the people were to mighty to conquer. Joshua and Caleb confidently disagreed knowing that with God all things are possible. The people sided with the cowardly 10 spies and wanted to stone Joshua and Caleb but didn't. For their disbelief God had them wander in the wilderness until every one that was 20 years old or more died in the wilderness. This lasted forty years.

Along the way the people were rebellious and wicked. God punished them in various ways. At one point they tried to take the leadership away from Moses and Aaron. On four occasions (one of which is in Exodus) God intended to destroy them and begin a new nation with Moses. In every instance Moses pled with God not to and he refrained. If he had destroyed them history would be very different.

Multiple times in this book the people are accounted for, thus its title. This prepared them for the promised land and verified that all of the wicked generation was dead. Toward the conclusion of the book Aaron's high priesthood is given to his son and he dies in Mount Hor at the age of 123.

Deuteronomy is the next book. In it Moses reviews the law with the people and gives them instructions with warnings as they continue on without him.
