The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam decided to make the largest composite photo ever made of a painting (January 2022) and published this digital version of The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn (1642) on the museum website. This allows anyone anywhere to study this masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age in its smallest possible details.

The 5.6 terabyte composite photo of The Night Watch was made by stitching together 8439 ultra-high-resolution photos. These photos were taken with a (48000 USD!) 100-Mb Hasselblad H6D-400c MS camera. This state-of-the-art camera uses multi-shot technology producing 400Mb 55x41mm photos in true color with a resolution of 5 micrometer (0,005mm). It took several months to shoot the 8439 UHR photos. Artificial intelligence stitched the 8439 UHR photos together to produce the composite image found on the museum website.
