Welcome Two: OFSTED Education Inspection Framework (EIF) 2019

In September 2019, the new Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF) came into effect.

The new inspections will make sure that all learners are receiving a high-quality education to put them on a track for a successful future. Less time will be spent analysing exam results and test data, and instead will focus on how the apprenticeship provider has achieved its results. The Ofsted grading system will stay the same: outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate. However, the judgement categories have been completely revised.

The new framework has created a shift towards a more holistic inspection approach. This is great news as it encourages providers to focus on best practice learning and development, on top of a new knowledge and skills focused delivery model. If the learning is of top quality, we know the results will follow.

The rebalanced set of judgements will be assessed on the following criteria:

1. Quality of education

There are three major components when judging the curriculum:

• Intent – focussing on the curriculum build, thought process and strategy, and how this is designed in the best way to enhance the experience for the apprentice

• Implementation – aligned to the quality of the teaching and training to ensure the delivery is of the best possible quality and enjoyment for the apprentice

• Impact – having a focus and measurement of the results of the learning and therefore enabling the apprentices to achieve their goals

2. Behaviour and attitudes

The new behaviour and attitudes judgement will look at how well behaviour is managed to create a calm, orderly and safe environment that is a basic necessity for excellent learning.

3. Personal development

The personal development judgement recognises the influence of education settings on young peoples’ lives.

4. Leadership and management

This judgement encourages greater pro-activity to support teachers’ well-being. These include a responsibility to demonstrate that staff are protected from bullying and harassment and that settings successfully manage workloads which is an increased focus for Ofsted.

Embedding short learning videos in to your curricula is a great way to support your Apprentices learning journey and help them build new skills and habits. We can easily start to forget what we’ve learnt if we don’t have the opportunity to apply, so providing clear introductions and reminders to top and tail workshops drive an increase in engagement, application and productivity. Welcome Two can provide you with a library of 2-minute videos to meet this need and support your new EIF transformation.
