In the history of the Old West, few men have conjured up more admiration- or controversy- than The Texas Rangers.

Originally founded by Stephen F. Austin in the 1820’s, the Rangers were designed to be a mobile strikeforce used to stem the tide of ongoing Comanche raiding that plagued the Texas frontier.

They did not wear standard uniforms, instead opting for buckskin leggings, Mexican serapes, and wide-brimmed hats.

Armed with single-shot rifles and revolvers, and atop fleet-footed quarter horses, the Rangers took the field in what was very likely the most dangerous area in the world at the time. Many of these young men met horrifying, violent ends at the hands of the Comanche in the wilds of Texas.

However, many others went on to survive the proverbial meatgrinder of frontier fighting, and revolutionize the way warfare was conducted forever.

These are their stories.
