What are the common surgical procedures which can be performed laparoscopically is one of the most common questions which I hear. So, being in the field of laparoscopic surgery for the past 26 years, I can confidently tell that any organ within the abdominal cavity can be approached laparoscopically. I mean to tell that right from the lower end of the oesophagus till the rectal junction we can touch the intestinal system, the liver, the pancreas, the spleen, the organs in the retroperitoneal tract region are like the kidney, the ureter, urinary bladder or in the pelvis the lymph nodes. All this can be approached. In common terms, I can tell that the lower end of the oesophagus can have problems related to hiatus hernia, and we can do it laparoscopically. We have achalasia cardia; we can do Heller’s cardiomyotomy laparoscopically, very, very conveniently. On the stomach, we can do bariatric surgeries, very commonly performed sleeve gastrectomy, single anastomosis bypass procedure or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or even a perforated gastric ulcer can be laparoscopically repaired. On the duodenum, a duodenal ulcer can be, you know, if it is perforated, we can repair it, and we can even put a patch of the omentum. On the liver and the gallbladder very commonly performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We can even do CBD exploration laparoscopically. Liver abscess can be treated laparoscopically. We can remove a lump in the liver, do a partial resection of the liver laparoscopically. All this has come up hugely because of the advent of high definition cameras, 4K cameras and ligation instruments in the form of LigaSure, harmonic scalpel, and Cyber Knife. All these have helped in a huge way, and even the lasers have helped us in a huge way in operating all these advanced surgical procedures. On the intestine, we can do a segmental resection. Sometimes obstruction can be released. Cancer of the small intestine and the large intestine can be operated on laparoscopically. A full range of surgical procedures within the abdominal cavity can be done laparoscopically. We do cancer of the large intestine, that is, if it is a right one, right, left, say descending colon or sigmoid colon cancer, we do left colectomy. Transverse colon, we can do a segmental resection. We can do abdomino-perineal resection for a cancer of the rectum in the lower end, or maybe do low anterior resection also if the rectal cancer is a little high, where we can still be able to anastomose and give the continuity of the intestine. We can do a full range of surgical procedures on the uterus, tubes and ovary. Maybe it is a fibroid, ovarian cyst or tubal recanalisation, or removal of the uterus for some reason. Hystero-laparoscopy can be done for an infertility procedure. So there is no end, and everything which we can think about in the abdominal cavity can be done laparoscopically. At the same time, what we can do on the kidney, ureter, and the bladder is something like, you know, kidneys can be harvested for transplant, laparoscopic removal of a kidney for a transplant for some other patient. The primary donor would be undergoing a laparoscopic nephrectomy, which is a wonderful thing which can happen. Or if it is an infected or a cancerous kidney, we can still resect the kidney laparoscopically. That is called radical nephrectomy. Ureter, we can perform an exploration if necessary. And bladder, of course, we can plan prostate radical prostatectomy laparoscopically and also in case of, you know, cancer of cervix, Wertheim’s hysterectomy, which is very very complex surgical procedure, can be performed laparoscopically because the visualization is such good and we can visualize the pelvic lymph nodes, we can pick up each lymph node and try and name them. We can go and explore around all the pelvic vessels, great vessels and safely execute the surgical procedure without any big fuss.
