There are several large initiatives that have potential to create a paradigm shift in the way outcomes measurement is practiced. These include the PROMIS, Neuro-QOL and adaptations for rehabilitation populations, the TBI-QOL and SCI-QOL and all have been developed using innovative item banking procedures and Item Response Theory. All of these scales utilized extensive qualitative data from patients and clinicians to help ensure clinical relevance and each system measures a broad spectrum of physical, mental, cognitive, and social domains of functioning. The final scales can be administered via Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) or traditional short forms. They will not only impact outcomes assessment in clinical trials but can also provide meaningful assessment that could impact clinical practice. The talk is appropriate for anyone interested in outcomes research, using NIH developed measures in grant applications, or new assessment techniques that can improve clinical practice.

David Tulsky, Ph.D. is a Professor in Physical Therapy and Directs a Center on Assessment Research and Translation at the University of Delaware. Dr. Tulsky has had numerous grants to develop outcomes measures from the NIH, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, Department of Defense, and the VA Rehabilitation Research and Development program.
