Fans of German engineering, this one's for you! Caleb takes us on a tour of the Volkspistole, the Heckler & Koch VP9 "People's Pistol." It's a striker-fired pistol introduced in 2014, commonly used by military and police across Europe, and popular in the U.S., too. Chambered in 9mm Luger (9x19), the VP9 comes with a 15-round magazine, with optional extended 20-round and 10-round (sigh!) mags available. The VP9's features include ambidextrous controls, interchangeable backstrap inserts, cocking indicator, M1913 under-receiver accessory rail for a light / laser, and white dot sights as standard equipment. Caleb has "tacticalized" his VP9 with night sights and a threaded barrel. The VP9 has deep, front and rear cocking serrations, plus removable nubs at the rear of the slide to give the shooter an excellent grasp when racking the slide. The ambidextrous magazine release is a pair of paddles at the bottom rear of the triggerguard that you push down on to drop the mag. For folks who don't like the paddles, H&K offers a VP9B with a traditional mag release button. The trigger has some takeup, then a super-crisp release that is "phenomenal" for a striker-fired pistol, says Caleb.

H&K offers a LOT of VP9 variants for competition, police, military special forces, optic-ready models, the VP9B, and the compact VP9SK with a shortened slide and frame. There's a VP40 model for folks who want the extra punch of the .40 S&W round.
