When it comes to water monitors as pets then the sensible option is to buy a fully captive bred animal , in your own country, that’s been well handled and acclimated to human interaction from hatching.
Unfortunately some of us go down the ‘farmed ‘ water monitor route .
Farmed reptiles are usually either; gravid females caught from the wild and held captive till they lay their eggs . Wild
Reptile eggs take and hatched in captivity .
Or wild adults bred in captivity . But all these baby water monitors essentially haven’t had an easy ride and behave like roughly handled wild lizards for the most part .
They then get to travel the world before reaching the reptile dealer you purchase from.

These baby lizards are usually very scared of humans and most things that move ( as nature programmed them to be ) and will squirm or bite or just freeze with fear if you handle them.
Water monitors have some brain power and it’s best to tame them gently not by forced handling , but tame they will, eventually .
