This video tells the story of Japanese POWs who discovered American abundance through something as simple as a chocolate bar. For soldiers who'd been surviving on dwindling rice rations, sometimes supplemented by whatever they could forage, the sheer quantity and quality of American food was shocking. We examine the psychological impact of realizing their own military had been starving them while telling them about American weakness. We look at how something as small as a Hershey bar could crack the propaganda they'd believed their entire lives.
We also explore the contrast between Japanese and American POW treatment—how Japanese soldiers expected brutal treatment based on how they'd been taught to view prisoners, and their confusion when Americans fed them better than their own officers had. For some, chocolate became their first taste of a world they'd been taught didn't exist: one where abundance was normal and even enemy prisoners were treated humanely.
