When drought struck Kitati village in the United Republic of Tanzania, Ms. Hadija Hussein, 70, was forced to sell all her cattle to survive. Like many farmers, she feared that another dry season could destroy what little remained.

Through the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), hope is flowing again. By mobilizing blended finance and channeling global funds through local governments, UNCDF supports the rebuilding of a 1,620-meter irrigation canal, a lifeline for 351 farmers and their families.

This initiative not only expands irrigation to 170 hectares of farmland, but also empowers women farmers and helps communities adapt to the effects of climate change.

To date, over 10,500 people across three Tanzanian districts have benefited from similar adaptive investments, made possible through the partnership of the Government of Tanzania, Belgium, the European Union, Ireland, and Norway.
