The Eurasian wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) is a tiny bird (~3.7 in) found in Eurasia and Africa (Maghreb). It was formerly considered conspecific with two North American species: the winter wren (Troglodytes hiemalis) and the Pacific wren (Troglodytes pacificus).

The Eurasian wren appears in countless myths and legends. In Christianity, the bird is said to have betrayed Saint-Stephen, the first Christian martyr. According to Suetonius, the assassination of Julius Caesar was foretold by an unfortunate wren as well.

In European folklore, the bird is often referred to as the king of the birds. This title comes from a fable attributed to Aesop by Plutarch (~600 BC), in which the birds wanted to declare king whoever could fly the highest. The cunning wren hid in the eagle's plumage. When the latter flew up and thought it had won, the rested wren flew over the eagle and shouted: "I am King!". Angry, the birds locked the wren in a mouse hole, from which he escaped. Since then, however, the bird has lived in the undergrowth for fear of being discovered.

In many cultures around the world, the Eurasian wren is still referred to as a king. In Germany, for example, the bird is nicknamed "Zaunkönig" (king of the fence).
