Teddy bears made by Karen Torp were presented to Kyiv Lions Club as part of a larger donation of children’s items she lovingly prepared to support children in Ukraine.
Karen Torp is 102 years old, turning 103 in February. She has been stitching for Ukraine ever since the war escalated in February 2022. Her heart has always been with newborns. Before the war, she had been stitching garments for newborn babies in Nepal.
Karen made socks, sweaters, and clothing in different sizes, and we delivered them to children exactly as she wished.
But the teddy bears made an even greater difference.
Karen knitted the teddy bears with the idea that they should be given to children — to bring them hope, love, and a sense of care from Norway. We found these teddy bears among the socks and sweaters she made and immediately felt that they could do even more than simply rest in a child’s hands.
When our twinning Lions Club Vara Sud visited us, we showed them the teddy bears — and instantly a new idea was born. Vara Sud made a generous donation for the teddy bears and took them for their own projects. With that donation, we were able to purchase a ligasure device for Ohmatdyt Hospital.
Lions Club Vara Sud will auction the teddy bears, and this will bring even more donations to help Ukrainian children. The teddy bears will serve twice: first as a symbol of Karen’s kindness, and then as a source of support and hope as they reach children’s hands or the hearts of people who resonate with this beautiful act of generosity.
So, while Karen’s teddy bears arrived in Ukraine through Kyiv Lions Club and are now on their way to Italy with Lions Club Vara Sud , children at Ohmatdyt are already receiving real benefits from her kindness.
This is a story of how one good deed can grow, multiply, and make the world a better place.
