The tale introduces a wealthy but work-obsessed Merchant (Kellik), who lavishes his home with riches but neglects his beautiful wife, Mira. Mira, feeling like a "pretty bird in a golden cage," desires the fine clothes and excitement her husband's stinginess denies her. Their lives are intertwined with a handsome and worldly Monk (Sev), a man they both consider their dearest family friend.

Seeing an opportunity, Mira complains to the Monk about her husband's ways and makes a daring proposition: a loan of 100 francs to buy the things she desires. The Monk, seeing his own opportunity, agrees to get her the money in exchange for her "love" while her husband is away on business. In a masterful stroke of deception, the Monk then "borrows" the exact same sum from the trusting Merchant.

With the husband gone, the Monk gives the wife her husband's own money, and their sinful bargain is fulfilled in secret. But when the Merchant returns and the debts are called due, a series of clever lies and shameless excuses culminates in a final, shocking proposition that leaves the Merchant speechless, having been outplayed by both his wife and his best friend.
