San Marino has a history dating back to AD 301 when it was founded by Saint Marinus, a Christian stonemason fleeing religious persecution. According to tradition, Marinus established a small community of Christians on Monte Titano to escape the anti-Christian Roman Emperor Diocletian. San Marino's continuous existence as a sovereign state for over 1700 years makes it the oldest extant sovereign state as well as the oldest constitutional republic.
