Cleanup crews were working to remove mounds of volcanic ash from villages in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Thursday, April 13, days after the Shiveluch volcano erupted.

The head of the Ust-Kamchatsky District, Oleg Bondarenko, released footage of heavy machinery removing ash.

Residents were warned to only use bottled or filtered water, keep windows closed, and remain indoors unless necessary.

Airlines have been advised to avoid flying over Shiveluch.
