Andrew Garfield has been forced to do some major damage control after being dragged by the Internet for his confusing comments about being gay without the physical act.

Let’s just get one thing straight: Andrew Garfield has nothing but love and respect for the LGBTQ community, so hear him out…

Another day, another case of an interview-quote-gone-wrong, and this time around, Andrew Garfield was targeted for his quotes about playing a gay man in his upcoming role in Angels in America.

While participating in a Q&A panel earlier this month for the London production in which he plays a gay man named Prior Walter, Andrew admitted to watching plenty of RuPaul’s Drag Race, saying QUOTE, “I am a gay man right now, pretty much, just without the physical act – that’s all.”

His comment generated tons of backlash within the LGBTQ community, and it even didn’t sit well with fans online, as many accused him of over simplifying what it means to be gay. But in a new interview with Newsbeat, Andrew has since addressed the comments he made, stating first and foremost that he “adores” the LGBTQ community and what he really meant by saying he was a “gay man right now”.

He said QUOTE, “That's of course not what I meant at all. That discussion was about this play and how deeply grateful I am that I get to work on something so profound. It's a love letter to the LGBTQ community. We were talking about, ‘How do you prepare for something so important and so big?’ and I was basically saying, ‘I dive in as fully as I possibly can.’”

He went on to say that his only longing is to serve and to keep the world spinning forward for the LGBTQ community in whatever way he’s meant to, adding that, “It's important to a community that I feel so welcomed by. The intention [in my comments] was to speak to that, speak to my desire to play this part to the best of my ability and to fully immerse myself in a culture that I adore.”
